Query fan-out is Google’s own term for a set of concurrent, related queries Google’s AI mode generates to request more information before answering. Google introduced the term with its AI Mode announcement in March 2025, and Head of Search Liz Reid explained it at Google I/O that May. Ask one question and the system searches several, then answers from everything they return. Fan-out multiplies the original query and leaves it in place.
