Ranking makes a page eligible for AI citation. Selection happens after that, and it runs on different criteria. In Ahrefs’ July 2025 study, 85.6% of AI Overview citations came from pages ranking somewhere in Google’s top 100, so the pool is still largely a ranked pool. A ranking page that goes uncited is usually ranking based on keywords and terms, and AI systems look for original, attributable sources.
